How to Stop "Shoulding" on Yourself

Are you feeling regretful, unappreciated, or stressed in some area of your life? Do you find yourself “shoulding” on yourself—“I should have done this . . . I should have done that”?  Want a simple solution?  List all that you have to be grateful for. That’s what I did this past weekend . . .

What a wild and wonderful weekend this past one was for us. Mother’s Day weekends can be that way. This one had more emotional activity and impact than most.

On Friday we celebrated my youngest son, Joe’s, 21st birthday. Legal age for everything adults do. After our lunch, Joe proudly gave us a virtual tour on his computer of the Architectural projects he completed this year at the University of Arizona. Joe went from legos at 6 to designing buildings at 21 seemingly in the blink of an eye.

Then on Saturday, we attended graduation ceremonies at the University of Arizona for my eldest son, Dominic. His mom also attended. It was the first time I had seen or talked with his mother in nearly a year. After the ceremonies, Dom left to celebrate with his mom. We felt fortunate to have spent time with him the previous day touring his hydroponic greenhouse project—the fruits of his labor from his Environmental Sciences studies at the U of A. He talked of feeding starving people in remote villages in Africa and other countries.

Thumper's Rule

Our thoughts and words have great power. They are tangible, real energies that shape our lives.

Which makes me wonder . . . why do people spend so much time discussing negative things?  Whining and complaining is unhealthy for the Spirit. It dampens our joy.

On the other hand, talking about positive, uplifting things feeds our Spirit. It re-energizes and recharges us. It heightens our joy.

Recently, I gave an inspirational message to over 200 people about “Re-energizing and Recharging.”  (Watch a 28-minute video).

In my message, I shared about how Lyn and I had gotten stuck by situations that were happening in our lives—clients were not returning calls, people who were working on my new book were not responding to my emails, etc.  I was feeling stuck creatively.

5 Steps to Create Exciting New Beginnings

Springtime is such a great time for exciting new beginnings. Yet, many people struggle with creating something new.

Does fear stop you from creating exciting new beginnings in your life? Do you find yourself beginning something new, yet abandoning it in frustration before it’s finished?

If so, you will receive great value in the following five powerful steps to realizing any inspired idea, and an amazing true story that demonstrates what’s possible at any age.

Here are the five powerful steps for birthing any new creation . . .

1. Imagine – An inspired idea comes to mind through our imagination and intuition.

2. Visualize – Continuing to hold the idea in mind and discovering what all the ‘pieces of the puzzle’ are for this new creation to happen creates a clear vision (Note: This is not ‘How’ to do it--that comes later).

3. Expect – Expect that it will happen and decide and commit to do whatever it takes. This is where fear can rise up. This is also where it demands an exciting ‘leap of faith.’

4. Allow – Allow the natural design process to unfold and reveal ‘How’ to assemble all the pieces of the puzzle. Be open to unseen possibilities that present themselves.

5. Enjoy – Enjoy the process and celebrate your new creation.

(Ray speaks about the creation process in this entertaining video.)

Here’s a great (and funny) true story that demonstrates this process:

Practice Good Character
Good character is a pathway to happiness and peace of mind.

When we are out of alignment with our core values, it eats us up inside, destroys our spirit, and undermines
our society. When we are in alignment with our core values, it makes our souls sing.

While I was bicycling through ‘Heartland America’ in 2002, people shared about how precious life had
become for them: “There is no guarantee of tomorrow, so live more fully today.” I compared what they
said with the code of firefighters who sacrifice their lives for us every day: “Be safe, survive, be nice, and
prevent harm.” How’s that for practicing good character? What would our world be like if we all chose to
just practice ‘be nice’?

The Power of Purpose

Shifting Our Thinking – In 2002, bicycling through Kansas was ‘hell’ for me.  Slowly I pushed forward through a steady 15-mile-per-hour cross-headwind (with gusts up to 25 miles per hour).  When I stopped pedaling, hoping to coast and take a breather, I found myself stopped almost dead in my tracks due to the wind’s force.  No relief in sight, it seemed it was taking me an eternity to reach my 81-mile goal for the day . . . At times I literally screamed at the top of my lungs words that would have given my ride an R-rating at the box office . . . By midday, I lost my composure.  My negative, destructive thoughts had sapped my strength.  By the end of the day, I was physically, mentally and emotionally drained.

Have you ever faced a ‘hellish’ challenge that stopped you in your tracks and made you want to scream, “Enough is enough!”?

What would you love to achieve this year?

Are there any fears and doubts that are stopping you?

Is your “comfort zone” holding you back from following your heart’s desire?

It is hard to believe that it is almost 10 years since we made the decision to leave our “comfort zone” and take our Cycling for Peace journey across America.  Ray’s inspired idea to bicycle across America after 9-11 came to him through his heart—not his head.  Together we decided to follow our hearts’ desire to deliver a positive message of hope and healing to everyone we met along the 3,369-mile route.

Did we have any fears?  Of course!
Did we have any doubts?  Of course!
Uncomfortable?   You bet!
